Jeremy freiburghaus Challenge De Espana

At the sixth Challenge Tour event, Jeremy Freiburghaus achieved his best result of the season with 14 under par and finished 15th of the Challenge de España. Marco Iten was the second Swiss to make the cut.

In the first tournament at the Novo Sancti Petri Golf Club near Cádiz, 25-year-old Jeremy Freiburghaus was the best Swiss player in 28th place. After only one day's break, the Graubünden native got off to an even better start. With scores of 68 and 66, he was ten shots under par at the halfway point of the tournament, only one point behind the leading duo.

In the two final rounds he lost some ground with two scores of 70. Especially on the back nine he had more problems than in the previous two rounds. But to start with, Jeremy Freiburghaus once again made a firework display of birdies, winning five shots until the turn. Two bogeys on the back nine obviously weighed on his result. On holes 14 and 18, he had made par on the previous days and bogeyed in the final round. Nevertheless, his score of -14 and his 15th place are by far his best result of the season so far. On the same course, he had just finished with a total of -6 and a 28th place a week ago.

It was also the presence of his girlfriend Anouk Casty that helped him. "She came to Spain for the second tournament and the fact that she is caddying for me is an extra motivation," said Jeremy Freiburghaus.

Marco Iten's catch-up

With a first round 73, the Zurich native was outside the top 100. In the second round, he started on hole 10 with two birdies and two bogeys, staying in par at the turn. Then, notching five birdies in the last six holes, he carded a 67, moving up almost 40 places and entering the final two rounds tied for 50th. "It was a crazy day, I knew I had to take all the risks and it worked. The cut is much lower than it was a few days ago on this same course. Now we'll see how far I can go," he said.

But the Zurich native was unable to advance in the rankings in the final round. His scores of 71 and 72 put him in 46th place. He started well with a birdie, but lost five shots on holes 5 to 8. "Shortly after my tee shot it rained, but then the weather and my game improved again. On the back nine I scored -3, and that's a comforting ending before the week-long break on the Pro Golf Tour."

The other Swiss players eliminated

Joel Girrbach finished the Cadiz Challenge with a 68 on Sunday, advancing to 38th place. In the second tournament, the Thurgau native started with a 71. In the second round, he was in the running for a long time to reach the final. But a triple bogey on hole 6 put him way behind.

Raphaël De Sousa started on hole 10 and also recorded two bogeys and three birdies in the first round. "There was definitely more wind in the afternoon. I wasn't far from a good score today, but I didn't give myself enough chances for birdie," commented the native of Geneva. In the second round, he achieved the same score with three birdies and two bogeys, missing the cut by two points with a total of -2.
