OMEGA European Masters 2017
11.09.2017

Matthew Fitzpatrick (ENG) beat Scott Hend (AUS) in a play-off after a thrilling final-day battle to win his fourth European Tour title at the Omega European Masters.

The Englishman came into the final round four shots behind Hend after dropping a shot in the final three holes of his third round on Sunday morning.

He had caught Hend by the eighth and when he birdied the 14th, 15th and 16th, he had a two-shot lead before a bogey on the penultimate hole left him back in a share of top spot at 14 under.

Hend lost this event in a play-off to Alex Noren last season and he suffered more late heartbreak in the mountains, with Fitzpatrick parring the third extra hole to take the title.

Hend missed a six-footer for victory on the second trip back up the 18th and when the Australian found sand off the tee and went through the back of the green with his second, a par was enough to hand Fitzpatrick victory.

Luca Galliano

As the only one out of the four Swiss PGA starters, Luca Galliano has reached the final round of the Omega European Masters in Crans-Montana. Luca had only qualified for the Omega European Masters for the second time.  After two solid rounds he finished par and made it to the weekend.

For a while it looked like the 31-year-old Swiss PGA playing pro would finish in the top 50 of the OMEGA European Masters. In the third round, in spite of the pouring rain, he climbed up the ranking list in a big way. But a birdie that was noted for him at the 15th hole turned out to be an input data error and a double bogey instead. But also with a 71-shot-round, he was able to stand his ground in the top-class field of 77 professionals. Before the fog interrupted the play, he was equal with the English stars Lee Westwood and Luka Donald, former number one of the World Ranking List.

All three are three shots behind the famous Miguel Angel Jimenez.

On final day, Luca showed great fighting spirit. Despite two disappointing double bougies on hole 12 and 4, he finished with a great eagle on hole 9 and a solid T74.
